Appointments — Adelaide Clinic

No referral is required to book a physiotherapy appointment. If you do have a referral letter from your GP or specialist please bring this with you, along with any imaging and reports available.

Initial assessment appointment

Initial assessments are booked for one hour to allow time for a detailed history and examination to be taken of your shoulder and related areas. During this session you will receive a clinical diagnosis, advice on likely contributing factors and a treatment/management plan. If the injury requires further medical investigations or referral to a shoulder surgeon then this can also be organised by the physiotherapist. For more straightforward problems this session will also include initial treatment.

Follow-up appointment

If a follow-up appointment is required, treatment will usually consist of a mix of hands-on manual treatment and a specific shoulder exercises to restore any muscle imbalances that may be contributing to your shoulder injury. You will receive clear instructions on home exercises, including what movements to do and what movements to avoid, to ensure you continue to progress between treatments. Video is often used to assist the patient in understanding specific movement patterns and home exercise techniques. Measurement tools such as a hand-held dynamometer (digital muscle strength testing device) are used to assess effectiveness of treatment and home exercises and direct future management.
